The Sydney opera house is a multi-venue performing arts center at Sydney Harbour in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. With over 40 shows a week at the Sydney Opera House there’s something for everyone.
It is located at Bennelong Point which is east to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The New South Wales government, agreeing that the city should aspire to recognition as a world cultural capital, gave official approval to build the opera house. The idea was given by the conductor of Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Sir Eugene Goossens.
An international competition was held to get the best design for the opera house design that was to include a building with two halls—one primarily for concerts , dance productions and a second hall for dramatic presentations or smaller musical events. Architects from about 30 countries participated and about 233 designs were submitted. The design of Danish architect Jørn Utzon was chosen and he won $5000 for his design.
According to estimations, it was to be built in 4 years but It took about 14 years Starting from 1959 to 1973 to complete the building of the opera house. The estimated cost to build the Sydney Opera House was $7 million. The final cost was $102 million. It took about 10,000 workers to complete the task. Due to some controversies, even Utzon resigned in 1966 but the but project continued under the supervision structural engineering firm.
Sydney Opera House was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 20th October, 1973. After that, she has visited it about 5 times.
More than 10.9 million people visit the Opera House every year. It covers an area of 5.798 hectares with 2,679 seats in the largest venue, the Concert Hall. Arnold Schwarzenegger won his final Mr. Olympia bodybuilding title in 1980. Sydney Opera House has its own opera written about it, called The Eighth Wonder.
The building also houses restaurants and a professional recording studio. The Opera House was designated as the UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007. This is the place worth visiting.
